Archival attraction


Another new initiative from the Australian Experimental Art Foundation (AeAF, the venue formerly known as eAF) is its digital archive residency. The AeAF invites proposals from interested artists and researchers who wish to work with the AeAF’s archives toward the production and distribution of work, ideas and histories in a way that has some kind of electronic outcome. The AeAF has its first artist-in-residence, filmmaker and writer Jess Wallace, who is directing and producing a series of short videos for the web that document artist’s practices. Sarah Wall

The art of gardening sustainably - helping to spread the word about sustainable community gardening and to raise funds for Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA). Artists can enter works in any medium which respond to the idea of gardening sustainably, with particular emphasis on growing food and reducing chemical and water use, improving soil, and increasing our well-being. Chalk talks


Congratulations to Leeanne Ricci (of Bondi, Sydney) who was named 2009 Champion Pavement Artist (with $5K prize-money) in the recent Parramatta Chalk Art Festival, 29 Oct. to 1 Nov. Ricci triumphed over 30-plus artists working in prime conditions, with her pointed work, Urgent Attention: Kevin Rudd. Dom Intelisano (Oxenford, QLD) won $1K and was Highly Commended for his vibrant surfing polar bear, while the Best Novice went to Jonathan Verzosa (St Johns Park, NSW) for his artwork Air-conditioning, which will be custom printed on T-shirts from Mabuzi Art. The People’s Choice Award went to Brian Tisdall (Nambour, QLD) for his 3D depiction of dancing penguins, The Gurgler. www.chalkurbanart.com/sydney/index.html

Online Craft + Design journal

Craft Australia has launched an open-access, peer reviewed, online journal, which focuses on research being undertaken in the craft and design sector. Headstart for artists

Australian Arts graduates can apply for grants of up to $10K, through the ArtStart initiative. This new grant will enable arts graduates to establish a business or to gain employment as an artist. Applicants must have graduated from accredited artists training in the last 3 years to apply, and will need a business plan. Montsalvat residency 2010


The newly established Artist-in-Residence program at Montsalvat, outside Melbourne, provides artists with a supportive community in which they can focus on their own artistic practice and research. The residency offers free accommodation and studio space from 2 to 6 weeks, and continues the creative and community spirit upon which this artists’ colony was founded, by Justus Jorgenson.
