The Council wishes to commission a piece of public artwork to act as the centre’s gateway, with a sophisticated appearance synonymous with Double Bay’s prestigious reputation. The ‘gateway’ artwork is part of the council’s long-term ‘public domain improvement’ strategy to include new streetlights/banner poles and granite stone pavers. The total budget for this artwork is $100 000 (for artist fees, materials, installation). EoIs are accepted until 8 April. The National Library of Australia, through Picture Australia – which offers some of the nation’s best pictorial collections online - invites image-makers to ‘mash-up’ selected public domain historical images into new artworks, incorporating their own illustrations and photographs into montages which will then play a role in the national record – or may be acquired by a collecting institution. Picture curators from libraries, archives, galleries and museums from around the country have provided high-resolution images from their collections for the project. Image-makers will load their ‘mash-ups’ to the popular photo-sharing website, Flickr, after which they will be transferred back to Picture Australia to ‘Re-Picture’ Australia. Selected works from the project are also expected to be included in Picture Australia’s contribution to the Vivid National Photography Festival, 11 July to 12 October in Canberra, including a multimedia display at the National Library of Australia. For guidelines and images, visit: www.pictureaustralia.org Flag Metamorphoses call for artists:This is a participatory non-commercial public art project utilising a continually growing series of animations. The flags of every nation in the world will transform into each other through Flash animation, the intention being to reassess and ‘fluidize’ diverse national iconography. Artists from as many countries as possible are invited to develop and design an animation based on the interplay of two national flags. All accepted animations will be presented on the Internet, and any public presentations of the project at festivals and exhibitions will attribute individual artists/designers. The project is currently affilated with Federation Square until October 2 2008.
