Freak storm hits the ANU

The freak hail-storm in Canberra on 27 February, one of the worst storms in the capital’s history, cut a swathe from Belconnen to Civic. The worst hit was the Australian National University where nearly sixty buildings were damaged. Water inundation was the most common cause of damage, where gutters were blocked by hail and roofs gave way under heavy loads of rain, resulting in extensive harm to ceilings, walls, carpets, computers, books and documents. The hail also damaged windows and skylights on campus, destroying up to eighty per cent of the glasshouses at the School of Botany and Zoology. The School of Art, School of Music, Chifley and Library were among the hardest hit. The Drill Hall Gallery and School of Art Gallery were both damaged and exhibitions have been deferred. Llewellyn Hall at the School of Music is closed for performances; they lost their two Steinway grand pianos (and possibly their ceiling). And Art Monthly has had to move out of the Clocktower as the ceiling is in a dangerous state. They are being temporarily housed in the School of Music. Contact numbers and email are the same and up and running.
