Olympic portraits and dreams
The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) has been busy hanging images of our Olympic gold medallists. The gallery has received poster-sized replicas of the fifty cent stamps featuring all the Australian Olympic gold medallists from Australia Post which are hung alongside portraits of past and present Olympic greats from the permanent collection, including Betty Cuthbert, Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe. This is a great opportunity for National Portrait Gallery visitors to view Australia’s Olympic achievements and learn more about our inspirational athletes. Visit the NPG at Old Parliament House, King Georges Tce, call 02 6270 8222. KJD … Further to the Olympic theme, Oneira: The evolution of dreams is at the Canberra Museum and Gallery until 19 September, featuring treasured objects brought to Australia by Greek immigrants, which in turn have inspired works by contemporary artists. The exhibition has been curated by Vasiliki Nihas and is supported by the Hellenic Club of Canberra.
Malangi in conversation with Boonma
It would be wonderful to think that these two men, whose works are now being celebrated with retrospective exhibitions at the National Gallery of Australia, might have had the chance for a conversation about their respective work and traditions. You will have a chance to imagine this posthumous conversation until 10 October, which is when Montien Boonma: Temple of the mind closes. No ordinary place: the art of David Malangi continues until 7 November. Call 02 6240 6502.
